The journal is a magical place where all things are possible. It’s like a time capsule that takes you from the present to the past, from the inside to the outside and return whenever you flip through its pages.

There’s no debate between journal and diary, in our opinion. Choosing the right notebook type is up to you. It should be the natural and instinctive reply to the urgency of filling pages and pages with dense texts, sketches, lists of possible or impossible goals, dreams or feelings.

This post is intended to help you to spot the right item among those shown in this website.

The first voice in the top menu recites "Journals and diaries". If you go deep into it you’ll find out three different binding styles: half leather, leather and our rustic wrap journal Medioevalis. We’ll talk about them some other time, because what we want to highlight now is the difference between the "classical" and "old-style" sub-categories.

"Classical" is the journal where you might want to write day-by-day no matter what, create bulleted or wish-lists, organize your thoughts, record your personal emotions or physical status, collect quotes that most inspire you, collage pictures and printed texts, glue souvenirs of the places you’ve been: tickets, postcards, stamps, cards or collect information about those you still wish to go. If this is what you plan to do, then yes, this is your journal type.

It has (plain or lined) ivory color, coated (uniform surface) paper pages (100 gr./m2), and standard edges. Enjoy your favorite crayons, pencils, fountain, ballpoint, roller or dip pen and do almost anything you like. It might not be the right surface for watercolors and other brush artworks, but it depends on your technique.

If, on the other hand, you’re looking for a place to philosophize, then go straight to the "old-style” category and land in the region of your own dreams. These journals are simply amazing! From mini to extra-large size they fit to personal or autobiographical writings, travel memories, verses, poems, lyrics, short or never-ending novels, charcoal, ink and brush artworks...

They are made of plain, cream color, laid (ribbed texture) paper pages (150 gr./m2) and deckle edges (cut by hand), which give the whole such an irresistible, old-fashioned look.

The largest journal is particularly appreciated by poets and artists who enjoy the high quality paper and how it absorbs their inks, colors and creativity.  It looks great in old dwellings or villas, museums, art galleries, churches, castles and monasteries...

So, whatever you are: a thinker, a curious observer, an artist, a writer, a poet, a traveler… choose the journal that better suits you, sweep your busy mind clean, grab your favorite writing tool and don’t walk away from the craft.

It’s time to listen to your inner voice.

    Having bought two of these journals in Venice in 2017, I bought a 17cm by (H)24cm, full leather journal as a Christmas present to myself in December 2018, I started it in the January, I am now around two-thirds of the way through it, so I have just bought two more (same postage as one) which arrived today. My Legatoria Koiné journal has started many conversations over the last few months and just about everyone is in awe of it. Although most people balk at the cost, it is only expensive if you don't already journal. My usual cheap bonded leather books were very nice, but lacked the sheer beauty of these, also they would only last between two to three months and cost around £10.This will last in excess of seven months so I would have spent £30+ any way and had to travel in to the nearest city to buy it. With transport and costs it is probably no more expensive. Even with the postage my two new journals cost only £40 each, delivered to my door. They are outstanding, unsurpassed (in my opinion with over forty years of diary keeping) quality tomes, which feel wonderful, with a nice heft to them and an exquisite aroma of leather on opening the packaging. So don't hesitate any longer, buy one and you will buy more. Thanks to all at Legatoria Koiné for the lovey craftsmanship. I
